Matt Spencer didn’t just inherit the family business; he earned his place at its helm through years of dedication, learning, and hands-on experience. Growing up, Matt spent countless hours alongside his father Ted, whether helping on construction projects or fishing the waters around Cape Cod. It was inevitable that he would absorb not just the technical skills, but the unwavering commitment to quality and client relationships that defined his father’s approach.
Throughout high school and college, Matt worked with Ted during summer breaks and school vacations, learning the craft from the ground up. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Matt initially pursued a real estate career in Boston. However, after a couple of years, he found himself missing the tangible satisfaction that comes from creating something lasting with your hands.
Matt returned to Cape Cod and joined Spencer & Company as a carpenter, starting at the foundation level of the trade. He methodically worked his way through every aspect of the business, from framing to finish work, eventually transitioning into project management. This comprehensive understanding of every phase of construction gives Matt a unique perspective that clients and craftsmen alike respect and trust.
Now CEO of the company and having officially taken the reins in 2022, Matt continues the Spencer tradition of hands-on leadership, maintaining the same philosophy his father instilled: that excellence in building requires constant presence, attention to detail, and personal accountability. Under Matt’s leadership, Spencer & Company remains committed to the values of craftsmanship, client relationships, and the pursuit of perfection that have defined the company for over four decades.
